To be considered for a listing in our State Directory, credit counseling organizations must be a member in good standing of the National Foundation for Consumer Credit (NFCC) or Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies (AICCCA),

meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Be organized as non-profit in the state where the organization is chartered.
  • Be recognized by the IRS as 501(c)(3).
  • Have continuously operated in the State indicated on the application for at least 1 year.
  • Maintain a permanent physical business location. No Post Office boxes or home address may be used for the business address, and evidence must be provided of current lease or building ownership.
  • Meet all applicable State Licensing, Registrations, Bonding and Statutory Requirements.
  • Maintain a satisfactory record with the local Better Business Bureau and State Consumer Affairs and/or Attorney General's office.
  • Maintain proper insurance for the organization, including coverage for employee dishonesty and/or bonding to protect client funds.
  • Keep all client money in a trust account and provide evidence of this arrangement.
  • Maintain all trust fund monies in a FDIC or equivalently insured bank or financial institution.
  • Retain on file a letter from the financial institution indicating that the account is a trust account to the effect that each client is protected by the $100,000 FDIC insurance.
  • Accept any applicant that requires assistance regardless of the type of accounts or the applicant's ability to pay the agency fees.
  • Other criteria as determined by our CreditPage® Policy Staff.
